Western Australia’s Controversial Shark Cull Claims First Casualty

Western Australia’s Controversial Shark Cull Claims First Casualty

This actually makes me sick to my stomach!

Taken from the National Geographic website.

“A controversial shark cull claimed its first casualty this weekend in Western Australia, when a commercial fisherman shot and killed a tiger shark off of Old Dunsborough (map) in the southwest region of Western Australia.

In a move late last year that has since sparked protests, Western Australia premier Colin Bennettannounced a shark cull to control populations of great white sharks off of popular beaches in the region.

This was in response to the fatal attack on surfer Chris Boyd last November.

The cull—which will run from January to April of this year—includes deploying as many as 72 baited lines attached to drums and anchored to the seafloor to catch sharks over 9.8 feet (3 meters) long. Sharks smaller than 9.8 feet (3 meters) will be released.

Tagged White gets eaten off Mozambique

Tagged White gets eaten off Mozambique

As a lot of you may know, a tagged Great White, nicknamed Brenda (as in Fassie) was caught in a gill net, dragged to shore and served to the villages there. Truly a sad day, with us constantly learning more about White sharks, losing one (tagged or not) is a shame.

You can read the full story here on news24.com.

Here is a short excerpt of the article…

Cape Town – A shark tagged by experimental research vessel Ocearch has been captured, killed and eaten off the coast of Mozambique.

The research team posted a statement on its blog site on Tuesday confirming the demise of the 3.6m female shark, which had been named Brenda Fassie.

“Caught in a gill net, the shark given the name Brenda by the Ocearch team was harvested by village fishermen who gave the meat to the village and sold the fins,” the team said.

A Mozambican non-governmental organisation, a diving company and a volunteer traveled through remote areas to determine what had happened to the shark.

They eventually documented what had happened and retrieved the transmitter which had been attached to the animal’s fin on 8 March in Mossel Bay.

Why are we afraid of Sharks?

I came across this on youtube and almost started crying while watching certain parts in the film.  Even at 30 years of age it still astounds me how ruthless, vile and savage the human race can be.

“People who fear sharks in this day and age, fear only knowledge. Most lack the education to understand the truth about sharks and their place in the ocean and that fear of them will lead to the oceans fall.  If there is going to be hope for survival in the future, those who fear sharks, will need to be taught to fear for them…
