Spearfishing Dassen Island [Video]

Spearfishing Dassen Island [Video]

Here is a short clip of  spearfishing at Dassen Island.

Dassen Island lies ~10km off shore of Ysterfontain on the West Coast. The Island has a lighthouse and a small jetty with a few houses but is mostly home to colonies of penguins, cormorants, and seals. There are a number of shipwrecks strewn across shore line making this a foreboding but exiting place to dive.

Why are we afraid of Sharks?

I came across this on youtube and almost started crying while watching certain parts in the film.  Even at 30 years of age it still astounds me how ruthless, vile and savage the human race can be.

“People who fear sharks in this day and age, fear only knowledge. Most lack the education to understand the truth about sharks and their place in the ocean and that fear of them will lead to the oceans fall.  If there is going to be hope for survival in the future, those who fear sharks, will need to be taught to fear for them…

Interviews in order of appearance, Terri Harrison, Chang Chin, Ryan Banks, Dominee Gallagher, Ernst Stewart, Janine Goyetche, Madison Stewart.

Video – 12 foot Tiger Shark

Video – 12 foot Tiger Shark

A friend of mine knew about this story but when he found out that I had actual footage of it (guess he didn’t feel like youtube’ing it :p) he asked me to show him, thought I would post it here too.

Ryan McInnis, Craig Clasen, Brian Head and Cameron Kirkconnell boated 60 miles into the Gulf of Mexico for spear fishing. Photographer D.J. Struntz dove alongside them. He was working with McInnis on a video about the sport.

The expedition went as planned until a 12-foot tiger shark approached the group. Clansen took on the formidable predator when he spotted it was about to attack a dive partner, resulting in a two-hour combat that ended in the shark’s death.

They’ve engaged in spear fishing for years and frequently encountering sharks. But this time was different.
